Red Hill Creek Bridge

A damping system to keep pedestrian traffic from causing excitation of a popular footbridge

A damping system to keep pedestrian traffic from causing excitation of a popular footbridge

The Red Hill Creek Bridge is a 220-metre pedestrian span in Hamilton, Ontario, linking the city with Lake Ontario and connecting into a major recreational trail network. Designed to reflect Hamilton’s character with steel, red finishes, and a distinctive tilted arch, the bridge faced a key challenge in ensuring stability and comfort under heavy pedestrian use, such as during races. To address this, tuned mass dampers were integrated into the structure, effectively mitigating vibration risks without altering the bridge’s aesthetic. Since opening in 2010, it has become a celebrated community landmark and award-winning project.
