Enabling a lotus-inspired vision through climate-informed design
Enabling a lotus-inspired vision through climate-informed design
Navi Mumbai International Airport is a major new aviation hub designed to complement and relieve Mumbai’s existing airport, with the potential to handle up to 90 million passengers annually as it expands. Its striking terminal architecture, inspired by India’s national flower and shaped like a lotus, integrates cultural symbolism with daylight-driven design, energy-efficient systems, and climate-responsive planning. RWDI contributed to a resilient and sustainable airport design, helping ensure the terminal and its exterior elements perform reliably in Mumbai’s demanding wind conditions. Our work also supported a comfortable passenger experience along outdoor walkways and footpaths relative to the local wind climate.
