A tall, slender air traffic control tower

This 84 m-tall air traffic control tower (ATCT) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport in Mumbai, India is both tall and slender making it vulnerable to wind-induced movement. Left unchecked, this movement would make the tower uncomfortable for occupants. To mitigate wind-induced movement, most ATC towers rely on specially designed damping systems. The designers of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport ATCT wanted to create a structure that didn’t require such a system. The design team turned to us for help optimizing the geometry of their design to maximize the tower’s safety and comfort. The tower has been celebrated for both its architectural and technical sophistication.
