Ingenious solutions in building science, including the world’s first irregular tuned sloshing damper, give the city of Qingdao a showpiece development

The Qingdao Guoxin Haitian Project is a signature development on China’s coast, comprising three towers that combine hotels, offices, retail, residential areas, cultural facilities, and a 360-degree observation deck. At its center is the 369-meter, 73-story Tower 2, home to the Qingdao Haitian Hotel and the tallest tower in Shandong province. Located in a typhoon region, the development required innovative solutions to ensure safety, comfort, and performance at its soaring height. RWDI partnered with the design team to pioneer the world’s first irregular-shaped tuned sloshing dampers doubling as fire suppression tanks to control wind-induced sway while maximizing space and efficiency. This groundbreaking approach helped secure approvals, optimize design, and establish the project as a defining feature of Qingdao’s skyline.
