Modeling and simulations to assess the microclimate surrounding floating solar arrays
The Tengeh Floating Solar Farm in Singapore is one of the world’s largest inland floating solar installations, spanning 45 hectares with over 122,000 solar panels generating 60 MWp of clean energy. Situated on the Tengeh Reservoir, the system offsets approximately 32,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. The project’s floating nature introduced complex environmental questions, including potential changes to water temperature, evaporation rates, and the surrounding microclimate. RWDI conducted a series of modeling and simulation studies, starting with parametric analyses and progressing to detailed CFD simulations, to predict how the solar arrays would interact with the reservoir and adjacent forest. These insights helped validate the project’s environmental viability, ensuring minimal ecological disruption while optimizing performance.
