Shaping a resilient crossing over the Douro River
Ponte Ferreirinha is a striking concrete arch bridge spanning the Douro River in Porto, Portugal, carrying light rail, pedestrians, and cyclists across a dramatic river valley. With its 430-metre main span, slender box-girder deck, and cantilevered pathways set high above the water, the bridge serves as both critical transport infrastructure and a defining addition to Porto’s skyline. RWDI supported the project by helping ensure the structure performs safely and comfortably under the complex wind conditions of its exposed valley setting. Our work informed the design to address wind stability, vibration performance, and user comfort, supporting reliable light rail operations and a positive experience for pedestrians and cyclists while reinforcing the bridge’s long-term structural performance.
