Determining the strategic placement of park elements to maximize natural ventilation and outdoor pedestrian comfort

Determining the strategic placement of park elements to maximize natural ventilation and outdoor pedestrian comfort

As part of Madrid Nuevo Norte, Parque Central transforms a former railway yard into a vibrant public space designed by WEST 8 with Porras Guadiana Arquitectos. RWDI supported the winning design by applying advanced wind and climate analysis tools to guide the placement of park elements, maximize shading, and channel prevailing winds for natural ventilation. Our work ensured the Jardín del Viento, a spiral-shaped, vegetation-covered structure at the park’s heart, delivered its intended cooling effect, enhancing pedestrian comfort and setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban park design.
