Mitigating construction impacts for Australia’s deepest traffic tunnels

NorthConnex is a nine-kilometer twin tunnel linking two motorways. As with all major infrastructure projects in metropolitan areas, significant noise and vibration aspects had to be managed, particularly with residential neighbourhoods nearby. We assessed operational traffic noise, developing and validating a noise model. In accordance with project approval conditions and community consultation, we prepared an operational noise report and management plan. During construction, we monitored construction noise and vibration. Our efforts prevented construction delays, allowed 24-hour tunnelling to proceed, and were crucial to the timely opening of this much-anticipated bypass, the twin tunnels of which are the deepest in Australia.
