Helping the tallest building in Hong Kong efficiently withstand typhoons

Helping the tallest building in Hong Kong efficiently withstand typhoons

The International Commerce Centre (ICC) is a 118-storey, 484m skyscraper in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District and the tallest building in the city. Located in a typhoon-prone region, the project demanded a design that balanced strength, occupant comfort, and construction efficiency under extreme wind conditions. RWDI supported the design team with boundary layer wind tunnel testing, advanced statistical modeling of Hong Kong’s wind climate, and detailed topographic modeling to capture the effects of the city’s mountainous landscape. This intelligence enabled the design team to optimize structural efficiency while ensuring resilience to severe windstorms. Completed in 2010, the ICC has earned multiple international awards and proven its performance during Typhoon Vicente in 2012.
