HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct

Innovative solutions to noise mitigation in support of the longest railway bridge in the United Kingdom

Set to become the longest railway bridge in the United Kingdom, the 3.4km Colne Valley Viaduct will carry the HS2 high-speed line across lakes and waterways on the outskirts of London. RWDI was brought in to support the detailed design of noise mitigation measures, drawing on its experience from HS1. The team developed custom noise reduction calculations specific to high-speed rail on viaducts and introduced innovative barrier designs combining transparent and traditional materials. This work supported planning approvals and continues to inform acoustic refinements as the design evolves.
