HS2 Chiltern Tunnels

Providing the noise, vibration, and air quality framework for a massive construction undertaking with many stakeholders

Advising on groundborne noise and vibration for HS2’s longest tunnels

Spanning 16 kilometers, the Chiltern Tunnels are the longest on the HS2 line, running beneath the Chiltern Hills northwest of London. RWDI was engaged to advise on all technical aspects of groundborne noise and vibration during tunnel construction. Our team conducted risk assessments and advanced vibration modelling to predict impacts from tunnel boring and cross-passage construction. We also supported engagement efforts with local authorities and communities ahead of TBM arrival at sensitive locations. Through extensive on-site surveys – including residential areas, heritage buildings, offices, and a hospital – we refined our models to ensure accurate, confident predictions.
