A tall, slender air traffic control tower
The 84m tall air traffic control (ATC) tower at Mumbai’s international airport is both tall and slender making it vulnerable to wind-induced movement. Left unchecked, this movement would make the tower uncomfortable for occupants. To mitigate wind-induced movement, most ATC towers rely on specially designed damping systems. The designers of the Mumbai airport’s ATC tower wanted to create a tower that didn’t require such a system. The design team turned to us for help optimizing the geometry of their design to maximize the structure’s safety and comfort. The tower has been celebrated for both its architectural and technical sophistication.
