Wind tunnel testing to ensure pedestrian level wind comfort around a tall development of residential and commercial towers in extreme topography

Perched dramatically on a cliff in Cankaya, Turkey, this 1.6 km mixed-use development includes 24 residential towers, 1,500 residential units, and 26 retail spaces. While Ankara is not typically associated with high winds, the steep topography created potential challenges for pedestrian comfort and safety at the base of the towers. RWDI’s wind consultants combined long-term weather data, advanced topographic modeling, and five wind tunnel tests to assess wind behavior across the site. Our analysis identified areas of concern and informed simple, aesthetically integrated solutions such as landscaping and fencing, ensuring a safe pedestrian environment while preserving the client’s architectural vision.
