Tintagel Castle Bridge

Rigorous testing for a unique footbridge leading to a 13th century castle

Rigorous testing for a unique footbridge leading to a 13th century castle

Tintagel Castle is a popular historical site associated with the legend of King Arthur. It sits on a headland previously only reached via a daunting route with many stairs. To improve accessibility, a footbridge was added – a cantilevered bridge with a striking feature: a small gap in the middle. The gap created multiple challenges for design and testing. RWDI was engaged to provide wind engineering to ensure the stability of this unique structure. Our rigorous testing provided confidence in the safety and comfort of bridge users in all wind conditions – including in extreme storms to which the area is prone.
