Exploring Norway’s ambition for a record-breaking aluminum bridge

As part of an ambitious infrastructure project to create a ferry-free highway in western Norway, the proposed Langenuen Suspension Bridge would span 1250 meters and, if constructed with aluminum rather than steel, become the longest aluminum bridge in the world. Working with the Norwegian Public Road Administration’s design team, RWDI conducted a series of experimental and numerical assessments to evaluate the feasibility of using aluminum for a bridge of this scale. Through dynamic and static wind tunnel tests on sectional models of both steel and aluminum deck designs, as well as numerical modeling of vortex-induced oscillations under traffic loads, RWDI helped confirm the technical viability of an aluminum main-span concept. Marking a major engineering milestone, this creates a key link in the highway connecting Kristiansand to Trondheim.
