Rail & Transit

Facilitating innovative design and operation of safe and reliable railway infrastructure.

RWDI contributes to the design and operation of safe and reliable transportation infrastructure. Clients value our holistic understanding of each project, which enables us to support multiple objectives. Drawing on extensive transportation expertise across our practice areas, we have a record of developing assessment techniques and solutions that become best practice.

Our interdisciplinary team of specialists deliver solutions to create a better human experience while optimizing for high performance results. From controlling noise and vibration to ensuring pedestrian comfort and evaluating the risk of extreme weather events on rail infrastructure, RWDI provides the necessary support to create railways that are in harmony with the natural and existing built environment.

Transit Stations

We help transit leaders increase air quality, improve acoustic performance, and enhance overall safety and comfort for passengers and staff in their stations and hubs. We deliver expert design guidance through wind tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and advanced modelling techniques to validate the performance of station and system designs. Our design experience as well as modelling and measurement capabilities allow us to confirm for our clients that the real-world performance of their transit assets matches their plans and expectations.

Transit clients turn to us for services such as evaluating the effects of high-speed train operation inside stations and optimizing of ventilation design (both mechanical and passive) for normal operations and emergency/fire conditions.

Trackform Optimization

When introducing new rail infrastructure into a community, ground-borne noise and vibration can be a major concern, but highly resilient trackforms, including floating slab tracks, can be costly additions to a project. Our in-house software accurately predicts these impacts and determines where ground-borne noise and vibration will be of concern. The high-resolution results allow for detailed trackform recommendations, resulting in the installation of highly resilient (and costly) options only in the locations where they’re required.

Floating Slab Track Design

Ground-borne vibrations and noise, originated at the train wheel-rail interface and transmitted through the rails to the ground, can significantly disturb people passing by or living alongside the railways. The implementation of a floating slab track is often the solution to isolate vibration in these high-impact situations.

RWDI produces an innovative floating slab track design that incorporates rubber pads and a unique system to replace them easily if necessary. This innovative solution also cost-effective as compared to a traditional spring design.
