The Challenge
Our client needed an independent verification of the newly operational East London Line traincare facility at New Cross Gate depot to assess whether its design and build contractor had complied with historical planning conditions. The client required a reputable team with an understanding of railway depot operations and the noise sources associated with a complex traincare facility, comprehensive knowledge of the project’s noise commitments and associated documentation, and an advanced understanding of the noise propagation calculation methodologies for these types of industrial premises. All parties involved agreed to the appointment of the RWDI team in an independent joint expert role.
Our Approach
RWDI’s team of experts:
- Leveraged expert software to calculate noise levels from all sources under various operational configurations and scenarios.
- Conducted a robust assessment of noise levels and identified failures to comply with planning condition requirements.
- Conducted field surveys of stationary trains within the traincare facility to remain in compliance with ISO 3095 and other procedures.
- Digitally captured sound signals to determine acoustic features and verify source characteristics.
- Performed meticulously planned field surveys (required to gather sufficient source information from each noise source within the depot) and highly complex noise modelling and assessments to meet complex requirements set out in the client's specification.
The Outcome
The highly technical data and conclusions were presented to the interested parties and client representatives. Feedback was positive, and the RWDI team was approached and commissioned by the client to assist on other noise and vibration studies.
