Abstract

Consideration of wind effects that result from the construction of tall buildings with regard to pedestrian comfort and safety is a key component of a the planning process in many urban centres. This webinar uses a local municipality as a case study to directly compare the capabilities of wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics, the two primary techniques used to quantify the wind environment, with a specific focus on the strengths and limitations of each. We also will discuss the impact of other modelling assumptions, such as climate data, terrain and building geometry, on the predicted pedestrian environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be able to select the appropriate modelling tool for the type of building and stage within the design process
  2. Recognize the impact of other modelling assumptions, such as choice of climate data, terrain and building geometry
  3. Appreciate why the planning process in urban centres considers the pedestrian wind environment during building design
  4. Understand the technical and commercial limitations of the different modelling tools used
