Abstract

In tall buildings, the stack effect represents not only an uncontrolled energy loss, it also can cause irritating noise, infiltration of humidity or odour, drafts and thermal discomfort, and more. This presentation discusses the factors that contribute to stack effect in tall buildings and will increase your awareness and understanding of how to control and manage stack effect through a variety of passive strategies

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be able to describe the physics underlying the stack effect and what that means for the design of sustainable buildings.
  2. Understand how to control the location of the neutral plane, and why this is important for stack effect as well as natural ventilation.
  3. Understand the role of the ventilation system in managing stack effect impacts and how this can affect the building’s overall energy reduction goals.
