Aerodynamics of Long Span Bridges - Considerations for Planning, Design, Construction, Operation and Rehabilitation

Abstract

Structural engineers are challenged to design long span bridges that are safe, efficient, economical, and structural works of art. Each bridge design is unique and must be suited for the topography and the climate in its geography. This webinar provides a basic understanding of the various effects of wind on bridges (bridge aerodynamics). Several types of wind-induced vibration will be defined and discussed including vortex-induced vibration, galloping, buffeting and flutter. The types of studies and analyses (Desk Top, CFD and Wind Tunnel) necessary to determine the effects of the wind on bridges will be explained and when to ask for them. Case studies will be discussed to show the value of wind studies and aerodynamic consulting though out the lifecycle of a bridge.
