Abstract

Modern bridge design is supported by various experimental methods in the evaluation of wind loads and the assessment of aerodynamic stability. This webinar tries to establish when an experimental work might be required; then the optimal selection of the type of test and specification of the needed information to assure successful support to design and greater safety for the public. When physical modeling is considered, a key issue is how to choose the optimal experimental approach. To illustrate this selection process, the types of experimental methods are briefly presented with their key benefits. Insights are offered such as how to specify wind tunnel testing and also how to take advantage of experimental data in the design process. Examples of advanced wind tunnel and full scale testing of unique bridges are also given.
