Abstract

The dynamic response of structures directly affects the performance of systems in the built environment.  Excessive vibration affects human comfort and the functionality of equipment or the environment, as well as the longevity of structural and non-structural components.  Since mitigating excessive vibration can have a considerable impact on the costs associated with a project, developing an awareness of potential vibration issues through monitoring can result in significant savings and better risk control for the overall project.  This presentation outlines how structural monitoring has been used to enhance the performance of buildings and other dynamically sensitive structures.  The benefits of structural monitoring are identified using real-world examples of projects ranging from tall buildings, to bridges, to industrial and research facilities.  While considerable research efforts have focussed on sophisticated monitoring and system identification techniques, this presentation will describe the fundamentals of structural monitoring, and focus on how it is used to enhance performance of the built environment.
