What happens when you design a bridge in one of the most exposed locations in the UK? What if the site was also surrounded by large rocky cliffs that amplified the storm effects? These were some of the challenges faced on the design of Tintagel Bridge, located on a spectacular Cornish coastline.
This presentation will provide a brief outline of the meteorological studies, aerodynamic testing and design implications of building a bridge in such extreme locations. The unique architectural concept of the structure – with a disconnection (gap) at mid-span– adds a further challenge and interest for the audience. Lessons learned from this project can be applied to other large and small bridges designed in exposed locations.
